A third of male University students questioned in a
survey in the United States admitted they would rape a woman if they could get
away with it. The study found that 32 per cent of the mostly white American
participants questioned at the University of North Dakota and at the North
Dakota State University admitted they would force a woman to have sex in a
‘consequence-free situation’. However when the question was repeated, pointedly
asking if the respondents would rape a woman if they knew there would be
absolutely no consequence, only 14% responded in the affirmative.
One straight deduction from this study is how selfish and
depraved our world has become: how many of these men would want their own
sisters/mothers/daughters/wives raped? The other deduction is a bit more
subtle. As pointed out by the
investigators of the study, the discrepancy in the responses to the two
questions show that many people will commit evil if only they could find
another name for it!
In discussing the findings, the researchers
pointed to figures from the US National Center for Injury Prevention and
Control in 2012 indicating that about one in five women become the victim of
sexual assault while in college in the United States. Most of the attacks were carried out by
people known to the victim.
