At the end of the first quarter in 2024, there were 473 Islam-inspired attacks recorded in 29 countries/territories globally. Eighty-one (81) of these (more than one in every 6) occurred in Nigeria, abruptly cutting short some 471 human lives during the 3 months. Two hundred and forty-two (242) others were injured in these attacks in Nigeria.
While these figures from
Nigeria represent a significant increase in the number of incidents compared
with the previous quarter (81 versus 63), there were less number of deaths (471
versus 643). Most of the incidents occurred early in the first two months with nearly
daily killings (63 events in 60 days) when Fulani “bandits” went on rampage in
Plateau state. The killings included
about 30 people (mostly women and children) who were massacred while taking
shelter at a “safe house” at Kwahaslalek village (Jan 23). A 24-hour curfew was

The incident
with the highest fatality figure (45) during the period however happened
between two rival gangs of “bandits” in Gbagir, Benue state with some 12 innocent
